Dive Australia - The Great Barrier Reef
You will be based in the fun city of Cairns, the doorway to the Great Barrier Reef. The dive options are:

The location, diving and lifestyle

The Great Barrier Reef is a natural wonder of the world and has been declared a World Heritage site. It encompasses 350,000 sq kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean and is made up of 2,900 individual reefs and 71 coral cays. Its ecosystem supports the greatest concentration of life on this planet including 1500 species of fish, 350 different corals, 4,000 species of molluscs and 10,000 species of sponges.

The Great Barrier Reef is generally not a deep dive destination. The dive sites have an average depth of 10-25 metres and visibility ranges from 10-30 metres. Water temperature ranges from 22° to 28°C allowing comfortable diving all year round.

The dive school we work with has 16 exclusive dive sites on 4 spectacular outer reefs. The Thetford, Pellowe, Milln and Flynn reefs are situated on the Outer Great Barrier Reef, South East from Cairns. These sites are rarely visited by other vessels so divers have the opportunity to view magnificent corals and fish life without the crowds.

Cairns (population 92,000) is the major centre for the Queensland region and is one of Australia's top traveller destinations. The city has the Great Barrier Reef right on the door step and is home to many great adventure activities from white water rafting to sky diving. It has also become well known for its major party scene so you won't be short of entertainment!

When to go

The dive season is all year round and there is no slack period. However, there are different weather and dive conditions at different times. From December to March the weather can be hot and wetter, but the diving is excellent. September to November tends to have the best overall conditions with calm weather and excellent visibility.

Dive safety

The Queensland dive industry has the best safety statistics of any diving destination worldwide. Dive operators are required to comply with strict government workplace health and safety standards.

In case of emergency, there are two hospitals in Cairns and there is a recompression chamber in Townsville. Helicopter rescue services are available from the reef.
